NEWS BULLETIN.....     October 2, 2008

The following info is available for any hotels in the Guardalavaca area, not just Club Amigo. If you have any info you would like posted here, please forward it using the Contact Form and we will be happy to post it.

Latest info (OFFICIAL FROM CLUB AMIGO MANAGEMENT) The villas at Amigo and Block 2 of the Guardalavaca section are now open, so is the Guardalavaca buffet. El Benny's will be open in the next day or two. Tour companies in Canada are still not sending people there (we are going Oct 12 and transferred to Brisas.) Athough some UK tour companies are sending people to Amigo. There is still a lot of work to be done at both Amigo and Brisas.

This is confusing though because it changes every day, but the above information came directly from management at Club Amigo. were 389 clients at the hotel at the time of the hurricane, and they stayed in the kitchen from 6 pm to 7 am along with the wonderful staff. The manager who told me this says this was the worst day of their life.

The Internet at the hotel is now up and running.

Well as most of you know, Club Amigo and the other Guardalavaca hotels have been badly damaged by Hurricane Ike. Just to put your minds at ease.. NOBODY from Club Amigo has been hurt. Most staff members however have suffered great property loss and as you all know, they didn't have much to begin with.

Latest info (unofficial) is that the hotel staff are working very hard and plan to have clients tomorrow in the villas and Guardalavaca Hotel, using the Guardalavaca Hotel as a Lobby and Reception. and next month they will open the Bungalows and in December they will open the Atlantico Hotel.

They are busing some extra workers in this week to help and they have been working 24 hours a day since the hurricane. Apparently the manager has been at the hotel 24/7 since this happened, and has been amazing as have the other staff. The power and phone lines have now been restored (not in the main building),but the internet is still down.

The Atlantico lost all windows from the 3rd and 4th floors, and the whole hotel appears to have lost the ceilings. 24 hour bar is ok. El Benny's is ok. Atlantico Snack Bar appears not bad. The local stores Flamboyanes, Commercial Centre, La Roca, are all damaged but now open.

The tourists who were at the hotel at the time were looked after by the staff who left their own families behind to help the tourists, and we want them to know that we are very proud of them. The tour companies have now brought the tourists home and reports and photos are starting to come in.

If you are worried about a specific person try asking our members on the Shoutbox to the left of this page, and if you get any reports, please kindly post them on the Message Board, (ask Carole or Jacquie on the Shoutbox to register you) as the shoutbox messages go by so fast. If you have any photos as tourists return home, please post them in our Photo Album.

If you are booked to go here in the near future, please call your travel agent or tour company to find out what is happening. Unofficially we have heard that the main hotel will not be able to open until the middle of December. I had one bulletin that said Club Amigo would be operational in two weeks time, this was from Hola Sun. I think that is pretty optimistic but it is the only official news we can offer at this point.

note: this is NOT the official Club Amigo Atlantico resort web site. It is a community site for information and discussion about the resort and Cuba in general.
You can contact the hotel here.
